Section 1: Landforms of East Asia

1. Summarize the main ideas of this section found on page 689.
2. Answer the following question: East Asia is made up of highlands and lowlands. Why do you think most people live in the lowland areas?

  1. East Asia makes up most of the continent, and includes many land forms and areas in this region. Some include the mountains, which go through western East Asia include the Himalaya’s and the Kunlun Shaw. Between these lie the high altitudes of Tibet. Then as you go east, you get into the lowland areas such as the North China Plain.
Some reasons in which I believe people live in the lowland areas of East Asia is because they might not be used to the high altitudes of this region. Also because of the coastal areas in which they live is good for shipping goods, as well as trading. Even more, they have fertile land in the lowland areas and that means good crops, and many land for it.

  2. 1. China and Mongolia extends over most of East Asia's landmass. Plateau of Tibet averages 15000feet in elevation. Narrow lowland areas line the coast of the Korean Peninsula. In the Pacific Ocean off East Asia's coast lays an arc, or curve, of mountainous islands. This islands form a archipelago, or chain of islands, and Taiwan off the coast of southeastern China.
    2. My opinion on why most people live in the lowland areas is because their ancestors lived there. Another opinion of my is because it is their heritage to live there. My third reason is because they have adapted to the environment. My forth reason is because the farmland is good. They need the farm land to farm and to product there food. There are my reasons why most people live in the lowland areas.

  3. The area of East Asia is mostly covered by two major countries, China and Mongolia. Mountain ranges and highland areas cut through the western part of East Asia. The two tallest ranges in this region are the Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan. Besides highlands, there are also lowland areas in East Asia. These lowlands include the North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. Most of East Asia’s population lives on these lowland areas. The islands of Japan and Taiwan create and archipelago, or chain of islands, off the coast of southeastern China. Since these islands were formed millions of years ago by undersea volcanic activity, this area has many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

I think most people live in the lowland areas because of many reasons. First, there are usually warmer and more temperate climates in low areas than in high altitudes. This is helpful in farming and irrigation. Also, there’s probably more fertile land in the lowland areas. This means that the land is easier to farm and harvest, which is better for their farming industry.

  4. Eastern Asia occupies much of the Asian continent south of Russia. Mongolia and China cover most of East Asia’s landmass. The other East Asian countries are North and South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan which all lie on peninsulas or little islands. Highlands and mountain ranges cut across western East Asia. The Himalayas and Kunlun are the tallest ranges located here. Located between these mountain ranges is the Plateau of Tibet. It averages about 15,000 ft. in elevation, because it is so high it is often called the Roof of the World. East Asia’s coast lies on a curve, or arc, of mountainous islands. These islands include Japan and Taiwan. Some of these islands are part of the Ring of Fire.

I think most people live in the lowlands because there might be more water or minerals there.

  5. East Asia occupies much of the Asian continent other than Russia. Mongolia and China cover most of this region’s landmass. Mountain ranges and highlands are through western East Asia. The Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan are amongst the highest in this region. These mountains have another land form in between them that would be the Plateau of Tibet. Measuring the Plateau of Tibet at 15,000 feet is known as the roof of the world. East of the mountains are the only major lowland areas in this region. These would be the North China Plain and Manchurian Plain. Most of this regions people live here. Off the East Asia’s coast in the Pacific Ocean there are many islands. Japan forms a archipelago. Taiwan was formed millions of years ago due to volcanic activity.

Most people live in lowland areas because of the warmer climate. Another reason could be that it would be easier to build not just houses but businesses too. Also lowland areas have better farm lands then on the mountainous areas. Some people like to live in cities and cities are usually on low ground so, people would live there instead of the mountainous areas.

  6. The North Korea, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, located in East Asia, all lie on peninsulas or islands. Most of East Asia’s landmass is covered by China and Mongolia. This region has two main mountain ranges, the Himalaya’s and Kunlun Shan. The Plateau of Tibet rises between these mountains and because it is so high, it is nicknamed “The Roof of the World”. Located east of the mountains lies the North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. East of the large landmass lies many islands that form an archipelago, or a chain of islands. East Asia is also part of the Ring of Fire, which formed millions of years ago from under sea volcanic activity, and this land borders the area of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

Most people probably live in lowland areas because of the high attitudes that bring you short of breath. Also being in lower lands is safer because of volcanoes and earthquakes. Lowland areas area also better for farming and raising livestock. If you live in highlands you might receive too much precipitation which can kill your crops or flood your house. Living in the lowlands also makes it better for travel and physical activities.

  7. Mongolia and China take up most of the landmass for East Asia. Countries like North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are peninsulas or islands. The area has many mountain ranges and like the Himalayas and the Kunlun Shun. It is also home to the plateau of Tibet which is so high it is sometimes referred as the Roof of the World. Some of the only lowland areas in the region are the North China Plain, Manchurian Plain, and area near the Korean Peninsula and Japan. This area is home to the highest population in the region. Japan is an example of an archipelago, or a chain of islands. Taiwan is one too. The Ring of Fire is an area where tectonic plates keep moving causing constant earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

I think that people might live down there for several reasons. One might be the fertile land down there. Farmers can use this to make crops because they can’t farm in many other places. It may also be warmer down there than in higher elevations. Rain is also helpful because of the Himalayas block the rain from going over and all of the rain is headed toward the lowlands.

  8. East Asia covers most of the Asian continent south of Russia. Countries of East Asia include: China, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The tallest mountain ranges in this area are the Himalaya and the Kunlun Shun. In between the mountains is the Plateau of Tibet, which is about 15,000 feet high. The Plateau of Tibet is so high it’s called the Roof of the World. Japan is an Archipelago. Archipelago means a chain of islands.

I think most people live on the lowlands because it is more fertile and it gives them more fertile soil to farm. It could also be because it is harder to move stuff up then to move it down. But the main reason would have to be because of the fertile farmland.

  9. China and Mongolia, which take up most of the county’s area, are two of the many countries of East Asia. Countries such as South Korea, Japan, North Korea, and Taiwan are located on peninsulas or islands. The major mountain ranges of East Asia are the Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan; lying in the middle off these two mountain ranges is the Plateau of Tibet, also known as the Roof of the World because of its enormous height. The North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain are the only two major low lands of East Asia, which is where most of the population lives. The archipelago, or island chains, is formed by Japan and Taiwan are located in the Pacific Ocean which was formed millions of years ago by underwater volcano activity.

Most people would prefer the lowland rather than the low land because of the lack of oxygen in the mountains. They would also live there because it is difficult to build living areas in the mountains because of its steepness. Water is closer the lowland areas too, which they use for fishing and getting food. People would have more access to them if they lived lower, which means more trading or importing their daily necessities. The main reason is for the crops they would need to grow for their families and such.

  10. East Asia has a large land mass and has many islands and peninsulas and very high mountains. The low land is fertile so many people live there.

Most of the countries are islands in East Asia. The plateau of Tibet are called the roof of the world because it’s so high. East Asia has a fertile low lands that’s why many people in the low lands. East Asia has thousand of islands some of them form a curved chain which makes an archipelago. The coast of East Asia also lies in the ring of fire which is a chain of volcanoes and under water volcanic activity.

  11. The Plateau of Tibet averaging about 15,000 feet high is called the Roof of the World. East of this are East Asia’s only major lowlands which are the China Plain and the Manchurian Plain. In the Pacific Ocean off East Asia’s coast lies an arc, or curve of mountainous islands. Japan which forms an archipelago or chain or islands. East Asia’s islands are part of the Ring of Fire.

People probably live in the lowlands because of the weather difference. The lowlands are most likely better for farming. Living in higher elevations would be colder then the lowlands. People could use the seas and rivers for food. Trade would be better for lowland areas also.

  12. Some of the tallest mountain ranges are the Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan. Between the two is the Plateau of Tibet. The Plateau of Tibet is averaging about 15,000 feet tall so it is called the Roof of the world. East of the mountains are East Asia’s only lowland areas The North China Plain and the Manchuranian Plain. In the Pacific Ocean off of East Asia’s cost lies an arc or curve of mountainous islands includes Japan and form an archipelago.

It is better because when the volcanoes erupt they give off fertile soil which would be better for farming. There is probably also a difference in the weather. The fishing is probably better for people. The reason I think that is they lie on the coastal side of East Asia. It is easier for trade on the lowland then the highlands also.

  13. East Asia’s land mass is mostly covered by China and Mongolia. The rest of the countries are either on peninsulas or islands. The Himalayas and the Kunlun Shan are the tallest ranges here. The Plateau of Tibet averages about 15,000 feet in elevation. The lowland areas are the North China Plains and the Manchurian Plains.

It seems that in many areas where there are mountains, people live in the valleys. There is much more air for the people down there. Since there is less elevation in the lowlands, it is easier to farm. It isn’t as dangerous because you can’t fall from a high area. It is also easier to travel because you don’t have so much to swerve around.

Most of the western part of East Asia consists of highlands and mountain ranges. The North China Plain and the Manchurian Plain are the only big low area in East Asia, and they lie east of the mountain ranges. An archipelago is formed in the Pacific Ocean, off the coast of East Asia.

There are many reasons to believe why most people live in the lowlands. One big reason is that there is better farming and irrigation. The farming is better in lowlands than in high altitudes because the soil is fertile, which means that the soil is easier to harvest with. Another reason is that there is probably a warmer and more temperate climate because of its low altitudes. Others may not be used to the high elevation, so they choose to stay in the lowlands.

  15. East Asia is much of the Asian continents south of Russia. Mountain ranges and highlands slice through western East Asia. Himalayas and Kunlun Shan are the tallest ranges in this area. East of these mountains is East Asia’s major lowland its north China plain and the Manchurian plains they are called. In the Pacific Ocean off East Asia coast lays an arc. The islands include Japan, which forms an archipelago or in other words a chain of islands.

East Asia is made up of many high lands and low lands. A lot of people live on the low lands. Because the narrow areas also line the coasts of the Korean peninsula and Japan. Also it is warm where they live and a lot nice then up on the higher lands. Also when there ancestors came they land on the down lowlands and started there so the population just keep on growing and growing in that area. There is a lot of population in this area.

This makes the lowlands an ideal place for farming. The second reason is that it is probably warmer in the lowlands than in the highlands. This makes life easier.
